Sniping to Avoid the Endowment Effect in Auctions
نویسنده
چکیده
An endowment effect can result in both multiple bidding and sniping in auctions. It can cause players to bid multiple times and overpay for items. Sniping is a rational response for experienced bidders looking to avoid the endowment effect. JEL: D44, D83

Sniping and Squatting in Auction Markets∗
We conducted a field experiment to test the benefit from late bidding (sniping) in online auction markets. We compared sniping to early bidding (squatting) in auctions for newly-released DVDs on eBay. Sniping led to a statistically significant increase in our average surplus; however, this improvement was quite small. Nevertheless, the two bidding strategies resulted in a variety of other quali...
متن کاملCollusion or Sniping in simultaneous ascending Auctions
In simultaneous ascending price auctions with heterogeneous goods Brusco and Lopomo (2002) derive collusive equilibria where bidders divide objects among themselves, while keeping the prices low. Considering a simultaneous ascending price auction with a fixed deadline, i.e. the Hard Close auction format, a prisoner’s dilemma situation results and collusive equilibria do no longer exist, even fo...
متن کاملSniping Bargains: Late Bidding on Pairs of eBay Auctions
Internet auctions have resulted in much data that may shed light on buying and selling behavior. Furthermore, they have allowed for field experiments to explore these phenomena with more control and with greater depth. Finally, they have revealed new behavioral patterns worthy of exploration. One of these behaviors is late bidding, or sniping, which occurs when people place bids close to the au...
متن کاملThe case for last-second bidding
Several recent empirical studies document the frequent occurrence of sniping the act of submitting last-second bids in online auctions. At rst glance, sniping would appear to be super uous, given the second-price structure of online auctions. This conclusion, however, neglects the sequential arrival of new auctions and the implicit option value of losing the current auction. The option is the e...
متن کاملLate and multiple bidding in second price Internet auctions: Theory and evidence concerning different rules for ending an auction
In second price internet auctions with a fixed end time, such as those on eBay, many bidders ‘snipe’, i.e., they submit their bids in the closing minutes or seconds of an auction. Late bids of this sort are much less frequent in auctions that are automatically extended if a bid is submitted very late, as in auctions conducted on Amazon. We propose a model of second price internet auctions, in w...
